From the desk of Laura Handey:
I have missed my Centsibly Southern family so much this week! Family time at the beach was exactly what was called for… and we enjoyed every moment of the trip. Of course, the stylist in me never quits peeking, though… so I bring back the 411 on patterns from my “people watching” at the beach.
There are pattern do’s and pattern don’ts, of course. I think anyone can use patterns IF they know their shape and how to wear it.
Here are some helpful tips for you all:
We all want to wear that printed or patterned dress that you see hanging on the display pieces in our favorite stores. Maybe you have already spotted it on someone else and thought, “Can I really pull this off?” I want you to be able to wear that fun print just as much as you do. So let’s go through the 411 of looking pretty in prints!
The first and foremost item that you want to pull out of your closet would be a boyfriend jacket, denim jacket or cardigan. This can tone down a pattern if you are not willing to wear print exclusively. For example, if you find an awesome animal print, make sure it is not a tight-fitting dress and that it flows easily with your body type. Toss on the cardigan, boyfriend blazer, or denim jacket and you have a practical option that is a lot of fun.
We all have these pieces hanging in our closet. Make sure the cardigan, jacket or blazer that you choose is tailored to your body. This will add definition and a bit more style to your printed dress. You also want to add a little color. Whether it is in the cardigan, jacket, belt, jewelry, shoes or even your handbag. This helps a fun printed dress take on a classy and sophisticated look.
Now here are some prints that I would love for you to play with:
My favorite is Leopard. Make sure it does not hug your body! Wear your favorite pumps, nude or even a pop of color. Embrace turquoise, too! I love it! Absolutely one of my faves!
Sometimes this can be a bit busy, but keep in mind the full detail. Keep it simple with just the abstract and nothing else. If you want to tone it down them wear a cardigan that blends with the pattern. And maybe even a belt.
Ah, I just love a good floral dress! The key to keeping this looking age appropriate and flattering is choosing a style that fits at your waist and adding the items you need to make it fit your style. Don’t buy a loose dress with large floral. This can come across very unflattering.
With any print, keep your accessories simple. Also, make sure you keep all your patterns simple and stray away from overwhelming your body in big shapes.
Pattern shopping should be fun and exciting. Use this article as you find the one for you… and remember that the one you love most just might be hanging in your closet. Don’t be too quick to go out and shop for that fun dress. Let me help you with your print and your style. It’s all about connecting the dots to see what works for you… and I LOVE helping you do that.
Love to each of you,
This print can be paired with leggings, jeans, or even white wide legged pants to give your look a fun chic feel.
To make this dress fun, add a turquoise purse, jewelry or shoe. Or just add your favorite pop of color! You can even pair it with a fun simple cardigan of your choice.
Now this is a great Maxi dress..it’s plain but has so much potential! Put your favorite printed belt or cardigan over it and you will be the best looking gal in town. Dresses are from Macy’s.
