A great way to start off with an awesome new style is to give your closet a clean out. You never know what might be hiding in that unknown realm of fashion.
You just might have some amazing pieces hanging in your closet that you never knew about. This is a great way to clean out your closet and update your style all at once.
Make room for those timeless pieces while getting rid of those items that are not worth hanging on to anymore.
Unused Items Should Go
Experts say anything that has not been worn in two years needs to go. As a stylist, I second that!
This gives you time to hang on to possible trends and styles that may or may not be back.
But, please be sure to think about the quality of the clothing. Some items are just not meant to last more than 6 months.
This is be a great way to get rid of those worn out items and replenish with new chic items. For higher-end garments, stick with the two-year rule.
Your Style Changes
Some items, even some high-end ones, are just not meant to venture into the next stage of your style or life. This is important to recognize!
We all grow older and more mature and so does our style (This is a good thing ladies).
Growing wiser and understanding your style is very important and can also bring back your youthfulness, so don’t let this scare you.
Don’t hang on to those trends that you long to go back to. Instead, find a new style that is age appropriate and fits you and your wiser personality.
This can make you look and feel like you are turning back the clock.
Take Care of the Good Stuff
If you have pieces in your closet like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Balmain, these are the items you will want to keep. Store them in breathable bags and in a safe place.
These pieces are or can be collector’s items. For those who love to buy and sell these timeless pieces you can either be the talk of the town in 6 years on how amazing you look or you can sell them and have lots of money to buy the latest items.
This is my vintage blouse that I found at the flea market last year. No, it’s not Prada, but I loved it and knew I could pull it off with today’s styles.
Here is a video of me in that blouse.
When in Doubt, Throw it Out
If you are questioning any one item hanging in your closet, it’s time to get rid of it.
Be honest with yourself when it comes to your size and if the style works for you.
Let’s Make a Deal
Clothing swaps are great. You don’t feel guilty about getting rid of your clothes and you have a fun girl’s night.
This way you also know your items are headed to a great home. Some people have an amazing way of styling so these parties are great for those friends who love to shop and play around with their styles.
Pass Them On
Of course, you can also donate your clothes. I am a big believer in this.
Don’t be afraid to part with items even if you don’t know what home they’ll end up in.
Get Some Help
If you are having a hard time getting rid of items or finding your style, let the experts (like me!) come in.
I will help guide you in the direction of your own personal best style and help you clean out your closet!
Here is a little glance at my closet….
I found some old curtain rings and ribbon and made my own jewelry hanger. I was getting tired of looking through my jewelry box and unwrapping tangled up necklaces!
I have had this wicker storage unit since I was 21 and living on my own. It obviously was a wonderful investment.
I now use it for my hats, undergarments, purses, etc.
And this is an old video of my sweet friend Caroline and how she organizes her jewelry. Peg boards are a perfect way to display and organize your accessories.
Getting organized can help when it comes to getting your style together. Even on those rushed days, like Sunday morning before church at the Handey house.
This takes maybe 45 mins to an 1 hour of your time.
Step out the door feeling like you are about to walk right off or on the runway :)
I hope you get some great ideas and understand how important it is to clean out your closet to find your style.
